If you have ever had a client ask you for the spot colour or PMS for some CMYK artwork you’ve created, you know that what you see on your computer screen is not always the same as what a printing press will output.  So, what to do?

Baby you can drive my car…

Posted by Amy on November 27th, 2009 — Posted in Shooting the Breeze, Work

Things are slowing down a bit for Christmas, but since I am moving on Monday (again!), I’m not complaining.  Thank goodness to be gone from the miserable downtown apartment building with the crusty and dishonest neighbour and into the cute little 3 bedroom house, complete with a fully-fenced backyard and neighbourhood full of kids my daughter’s age!

Now that we are officially going to be living in the ‘burbs, I bought a car!  This will be my first car since the $300 Ford Tempo I owned 10 years ago (holy, time flies!) and I’m excited.  My dad is driving it up on Sunday and it will be so exciting to be able to install our car seats and keep them put for the foreseeable future!  I’m also looking forward to a lot more fresh air and outdoor activity!

In work news, here’s the latest.  It’s a logo for a web banner.  They’ll be using a simplified version for the business cards and smaller uses, but I thought this turned out to be pretty sweet.

Lastly, I was excited to learn that at least one of my donated prints was sold at the aforementioned “Whodunnit” event.  The proud owner was kind enough to contact me and let me know how happy he was with his purchase.  Very cool!

Turned Down

Posted by Amy on November 2nd, 2009 — Posted in Work

It has been a busy, busy month - which always makes me very happy indeed, but does make it a bit quiet on the blogging front!  I had some really great clients this month, but funny enough I also had more than my usual number of hard-to-pleasers… 2, but a record nonetheless!

Funny enough, the work done for both was work I thought was really heading somewhere good… c’est la vie!

I’ve revised this a little to remove their branding, but here is one of the pieces in question…

Pinups

On the other hand, I also had some really great easy-peasy clients this past month too… here’s some of what I’ve worked on:

21 Days to Conquer Your Cooked Food Cravings

Green Smoothie Queen Ezine

The Green Smoothie Blog Banner

Gorgeous, Glossy & Gourmet, Ezine Banner

And of course, there was the usual stuff that I can’t share just yet, but will update you with upon release by their respective owners!

It’s Friday! Yay!

Well, Fall is certainly upon us here in the currently grey and cloudy Toronto. In my mind, I call it “Autumn” and add that dozy, Martha Stewart hum to it whilst (whilst!) imagining the smell of hot apple cider with cinnamon curling up from a steaming mug cupped between chilled hands half covered by woolen sweater sleeves.  Snort!

But seriously, as I sit in my overheated apartment (darned building-controlled radiators) flipping between uncomfortably hot to open-window draft-chilly, I long for summer and eat watermelon. Yum!  This weekend I’m looking forward to a girlie day of getting my hair cut at Toni & Guy (never been, but it has great reviews) and then a chick-flick with Tina, followed by yummy eats at one of Toronto’s finest.

Work has been wonderful and cRaZy lately.  I love my job.  I reeeaaaaalllly love it!  I mean seriously… I draw pictures all day!  It’s fantastic!

And of course, the usual stuff I can’t show yet…   I’ve been so busy and can’t believe I only have one piece I can show for it at the moment. Stay tuned!

P.S. Can you believe that Van Morrison thinks “Brown Eyed Girl” is a “boring” song!  I guess you’d have to be forced to sing it millions of times to think that.  I wonder if George Harrison had a secret hatred for “Here Comes the Sun”?  Nah.  Not possible!

Laundry List

Posted by Amy on September 19th, 2009 — Posted in Work

Today is one of those fun Saturday’s when everyone in the building decides to do a month’s worth of laundry all at the same time, and me, with two little girls and a road trip on the menu today…. well, I just need some clean clothes darnit!  Can’t I get my 2 little loads in there somewhere people?

So aside from the planned stargazing (yes, really) tonight, I’ve been busy with work, work, work and nothing could please me more than next month’s rent in the bank.  Phew!

Here are some of the things I can share.  More to come once they have been released into the wild by their respective new parents:

Did I Already Share This?

I think it’s really cool:

In other news, I had my first friend-date since I’ve been in Toronto (yes, my social life has been that sad).  I’ve kind of been in an adjustment period and as a result, I think I introverted a little more than I should have.  Anyway, broke the fast with the friend equivalent of homemade eggs benedict with hollandaise.  Yum!  Tina, you are awesome and I had so much fun laughing with you tonight and I’m so looking forward to more!

A Gift for You

Tonight I did a Photoshop tutorial, and these are my results… feel free to download this and use it for a desktop on your computer.

September Gift

I do so much work in Illustrator, that I’ve been wanting to work on amping up my Photoshop abilities.  This was so quick and easy.  I am amazed at what you can do in such a short amount of time and this makes me very happy!  Sometimes an illustration is best, but sometimes a little Photoshop magic can take you into new and exciting possibilities.
