Baby you can drive my car…

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Things are slowing down a bit for Christmas, but since I am moving on Monday (again!), I’m not complaining.  Thank goodness to be gone from the miserable downtown apartment building with the crusty and dishonest neighbour and into the cute little 3 bedroom house, complete with a fully-fenced backyard and neighbourhood full of kids my daughter’s age!

Now that we are officially going to be living in the ‘burbs, I bought a car!  This will be my first car since the $300 Ford Tempo I owned 10 years ago (holy, time flies!) and I’m excited.  My dad is driving it up on Sunday and it will be so exciting to be able to install our car seats and keep them put for the foreseeable future!  I’m also looking forward to a lot more fresh air and outdoor activity!

In work news, here’s the latest.  It’s a logo for a web banner.  They’ll be using a simplified version for the business cards and smaller uses, but I thought this turned out to be pretty sweet.

Lastly, I was excited to learn that at least one of my donated prints was sold at the aforementioned “Whodunnit” event.  The proud owner was kind enough to contact me and let me know how happy he was with his purchase.  Very cool!

I entered my first contest…

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

and lost.

Well, it wasn’t actually my FIRST contest.  I entered a logo design contest when I very first got into this line of work, and I won that one… so technically, the CreativePro.com “Designer’s Dream Giveaway” contest was my second, and while I didn’t win the awesome Pantone prizes, I was apparently a finalist… so yay me, or something like that!  Hahahah!

The design in question… my lovely Gossweiler Dentistry logo and website design, which will be live very soon.  I’ve seen the working version and it’s looking good, if I do say so myself!

So, I think I’ve officially got the bug… time to google more illustration and design contests!

Sometimes You Need a Break…

Stumbled across this while surfing today, and since my life with a 4 year old is all about Disney, it made me grin… Click the image to see more.

As a mom of an 11 month old, this struck a chord too.  Hehehe!

Here’s another, but be warned… this may be NSFW.

In life news, I’ve been sick for the last 5 days and feeling quite sorry for myself.  I am longing for the days of lying around sick in bed, watching movies, sleeping, and taking it easy.  The life of an adult means having to work, change diapers, feed kids, and play… even when you really just want silence your mommy to look after you!

…and here’s one last time-waster for you… this site makes me laugh!

Lotus Spa - Interview Design Sample

Lotus Spa

One of the things I’ve always enjoyed is reading good quotes.  In fact, I have a word file with pages and pages of collected quotes I’ve appreciated over the years.  So, I figured hey, why not share some art and design related inspirations here.  So, my first quote of this blog:

“Right and wrong do not exist in graphic design. There is only effective and non-effective communication.” — Peter Bilak - Illegibility

Today I’m working on a website design for a client, a design job application, and doing some online studying.  I’m always updating and refining my skills and knowledge of illustration and design basics.  You know you love your job when you really don’t mind surfing the net to learn more, even in your “spare” time.
